three shells

Chalk on black paper

I did these anti-clockwise from the spiky shell and the progression in learning shows:

  • it’s important to put down a lot of chalk – better to put down and take away – maybe there are times when this isn’t the case, but with shells it seems to be that way
  • thick is good – otherwise there’s a strange transparency that might work on white paper but less so on black.
  • black on black does work! I used black chalk for shadows directly under the shells to anchor them down – they are still floating in the void a little (though I quite like that aspect).
  • I spent ages on the first shell – yes the shape is more complex – but my confidence had grown significantly by the time I got to the third and it took a nano-second!
