Since learning about axis and measuring with a pencil, I spent a couple of classes on tonal values and structuring a composition (round objects and geometric objects). My teacher is very ‘carré’ – I suppose the kind translation of that is ‘thorough’ – but I’m beginning to see improvement in how fast I can get something accurately down on paper.

Practising tonal gradation with pencil.
These aren’t terribly clear, but this was all about getting a composition down on paper accurately – ensuring proportions of objects in relation to each other was correct as well as their position on the paper.
